Hibernation: alteration of mitochondrial membranes as a requisite for metabolism at low temperature.

چکیده
Lipids of mitochondrial membranes from hepatic cells of active ground squirrels apparently go through a phase change induced at approximately 23 degrees C similar to the phase change in mitochondria of homeotherms. This change was indicated by the activity of succinate oxidase from the isolated mitochondria exhibiting a nonintersecting discontinuous Arrhenius plot. This discontinuity in the Arrhenius plot is not evident with mitochondria from the livers of hibernating squirrels, which indicates that the temperature-induced phase change in the mitochondrial membranes has been eliminated. These findings suggest that physical properties of the mitochondrial membrane change in relation to the process of hibernation.

Metabolic suppression in mammalian hibernation: the role of mitochondria.
Hibernation evolved in some small mammals that live in cold environments, presumably to conserve energy when food supplies are low. Throughout the winter, hibernators cycle spontaneously between torpor, with low metabolism and near-freezing body temperatures, and euthermia, with high metabolism and body temperatures near 37°C. Understanding the mechanisms underlying this natural model of extrem...

First published April 9, 2013; doi:10.1152/physiolgenomics.00171.2012.—Mammalian hibernation involves periods of substantial suppression of metabolic rate (torpor) allowing energy conservation during winter. In thirteen-lined ground ...
متن کاملThe Relationship of Sleep with Temperature and Metabolic Rate in a Hibernating Primate
STUDY OBJECTIVES It has long been suspected that sleep is important for regulating body temperature and metabolic-rate. Hibernation, a state of acute hypothermia and reduced metabolic-rate, offers a promising system for investigating those relationships. Prior studies in hibernating ground squirrels report that, although sleep occurs during hibernation, it manifests only as non-REM sleep, and o...
متن کاملAdaptive plasticity of skeletal muscle energetics in hibernating frogs: mitochondrial proton leak during metabolic depression.
The common frog (Rana temporaria) spends the coldest months of each year overwintering in ice-covered ponds where temperatures can vary from 0.5 to 4.0 degrees C. Over the course of a winter season, the animals enter progressively into a state of metabolic depression that relies almost exclusively on aerobic production of ATP. However, if aerobic metabolism is threatened, for example by increas...
متن کاملInfluence of polyunsaturated and saturated dietary lipids on adipose tissue, brain and mitochondrial membrane fatty acid composition of a mammalian hibernator.
Dietary lipid composition profoundly influences the hibernation pattern of the chipmunk Eutamias amoenus. The object of the present study was to investigate whether these physiological changes following feeding of saturated and unsaturated lipids were associated by compositional changes of fatty acids of tissues and membranes. Animals were fed with rodent chow (control diet), rodent chow with 1...
